Michael traverso patricia leslie8/3/2023 Under cross-examination, Traverso testified that he was standing about 10 feet away from Joyell and Cerniglia at the dance and could not overhear what they were saying. “I can detect when a student appears to be afraid of a teacher or anyone else,” Traverso replied. He asked how Traverso, who did not have Cerniglia as a student, could tell whether she felt hesistant or frightened around Joyell. Ronald Harris, the education department lawyer handling the case, questioned Traverso extensively about his memory of certain events. Traverso said he told Joyell after his suspension in 1987 that in retrospect, “I regretted I hadn’t warned him,” about Cerniglia’s behavior. Traverso, who has known Joyell for 26 years, said Monday that he and Joyell talked about the allegations against Joyell at least 25 times between 1987 and now. School officials staked out the rendezvous spot but did not see Joyell.Ĭerniglia’s attorney, Susan Fink of Naugatuck, said Traverso’s comments about her client “don’t warrant comment.” School officials asked Cerniglia to agree to meet Joyell off campus one night. She testified that he said things such as: “I could be fired for what I’m thinking,” and “I’m very attracted to you.” She also testified that Joyell constantly pressured her to be alone with him.Ĭerniglia went to school officials after Joyell had harassed her for more than a month, she said. Traverso’s recollection of Cerniglia’s attitude toward her English teacher sharply differed from her testimony in January.Ĭerniglia, now a special education teacher in Rocky Hill, testified that Joyell made sexually suggestive comments while he tutored her for the SATs in autumn 1987.
